How do I fly a long route every day?
Past about five thousand kilometres the round trip is longer than the day. Paris to Buenos Aires is twenty-eight hours out and back, so one aeroplane cannot be in Paris every morning — it is still over the Atlantic. The game handles that by flying the route on some days and not others, which is why an aeroplane seems to vanish and reappear.
Two aircraft at 0.50 round trips a day gives exactly one departure, every day. That is the real answer and it is worth knowing, because the obvious thing — one aeroplane at its maximum — does not work and two at their maximum is worse.
- One aircraft at the ceiling (about 0.58 on a route like that) flies on roughly three days in five, in no pattern you would choose.
- Two at the ceiling gives one departure most days and two on some, which is lumpy.
- Two at 0.50 alternate perfectly: one out, one back, one departure a day, for ever.
Set the frequency yourself on the route's assignment rather than taking the maximum offered, and give both aircraft the same day start. They will stagger themselves — the game spaces aircraft that share a route so their flying days interleave.
It costs about a tenth of each aeroplane's flying hours against running them flat out. What you buy is a timetable a passenger can rely on, and fourteen block hours a day is a normal figure for a real widebody.
